The Nothing Economy
March 2, 2019
To some degree, this is a different version of February 16th's Heavier, focused a little more on academics (classroom or conference). Or, at least until the end, when I think about what gets left behind.
The Nothing Economy
I went to class.
I feel asleep.
I got nothing.
There were words.
There was exchange.
I got nothing.
I'm sure he thought.
I'm sure he taught,
But I got nothing.
--------------------------
I did my job.
I stood tall.
I got nothing.
There were tests.
There was currency.
I got nothing.
I'm sure they bailed.
I'm sure they failed,
But I got nothing.
----------------------------
I attended a session.
I intended listening.
I got nothing.
There were slides.
There was a cost.
I got nothing.
I'm sure he's pleased.
I'm sure it's on his CV.
But I got nothing.
-----------------------
I shared my woes.
I put on my best clothes.
I got nothing.
There were expected returns.
There were hushed confirms.
I got nothing.
I wanted to share.
For money I had no care,
Because I got nothing.
-------------------------
They went to New York,
Ostensibly to work.
I got nothing.
I would have had interest.
I wouldn't have been a hindrance.
I got nothing.
In the end what really hurts
Is not even a stinking t-shirt,
Because I got nothing.
