Another Brick In My Wall (Part II)
February 9, 2017
Building off of my February 1, 2017 poem, "Walls" --
------------------------------------------------------------------
Another Brick In My Wall (Part II)
My friend layers on the mortar,
Placing the starter on display,
Setting in infinite motion,
A flurry of laying more bricks
With breaking and scoring in mind.
Within minutes, I see my friends
Lining up, as I can predict they'd do,
On either side of the frenzy,
Layering in more and more mortar,
As if that is the key to fealty.
Along the way, strangers immigrate
Pick up their trowel, wield their spade,
Make their way into the fray,
Assuming this, defending that,
Enflaming the congregation.
And, all in all, I somehow got lost in the middle.
All in all, we all get lost in the muddle.
The view from the wall contracts,
Squeezes from the edges,
Manages to somehow crush
The stance some might take
To get to consensus.
The friend you know, you know
Has something worthy to admire,
The troll you don't, you know
Is simply there as adversary
And to represent all you loathe.
Meanwhile the posts get longer,
And are easy to collapse,
So that only the truly livid
Stick around, hoping theirs is the last block
Put in place by ram or by lift.
And, all in all, I somehow got lost in the middle.
All in all, we all get lost in the muddle.
