The End Of The Flame

The End Of The Flame [1985 or early 1986]

What do I do when I reach the end of the flame?

Do I forget who I am?

Should I change my name?

Do I sell all these papers, books and notes?

Do I give one last interview and review what I wrote?

-------------------------------

What do I do when the fire begins to fade,

When the light turns to shade

While the warmth drifts away?

All of these things that I thought meant so much,

What do I do with them when they burn to the touch?

--------------------------------

Who do I turn to when the burning goes out

And any satisfaction's lost to drought,

When the drive is disguised as doubt?

If I used to spend the evening with pen in hand,

What do I do when I have no further plan?

---------------------------------

Where should I go when the spark dies,

When the love of words becomes a fight,

And any mention of writing just bites?

If I have used my resources to the very end,

What will I do with the years I still live in.

--------------------------------

What do I do when I reach the end of the flame?

Do I forget who I am?

Should I change my name?

Do I sell all these papers, books and notes?

Do I give one last interview and review what I wrote?
