Our Distance

Circa 1985

The day you moved out, I sold the cat.

He loved to claw at where you sat.

The day you kissed me goodbye, I threw up.

I am still not sure how to decipher that.

The day you packed your belongings, I drank.

I kicked over the fish tank.

The day you walked out, I fell to my knees.

I had to give God my thanks.

I had always figured it would be so hard.

I was surprised by the ease.

You said it was time you were moving on.

I said, it is time you said that to me.

Oh, and did I forget to mention.

Let's not forget to keep our distance.

The day you left me, I called up my boss,

Told him his gain was to be my loss.

The day you flew the coop, I threw myself into work.

Maybe he will see how much you cost.

I had always figured it would be so hard.

I was surprised by the ease.

You said it was time you were moving on.

I said, it is time you said that to me.

Oh, and did I forget to mention.

Let's not forget to keep our distance.
