My stubborn heart

Wants to fall apart

From the weight it bears.

Three times it's faltered,

Bore what doctors altered

For the love in arrears.

My stubborn heart

Seems to stand apart

From the average Joe's.

It's seen multiple stents,

The same ER fingerprints,

And the pacemaker bestowed.

My stubborn heart

Can't stand to be apart

From my fondest affections.

If it had less use,

Would it flow like a sluice,

And not need these corrections?

My stubborn heart

Refuses to be a part

Of such icy interactions.

It follows its own beat,

Knows not to be discreet

And despises personal contractions.
