Motifs

We need to move beyond

Our obsession with motive,

Pull instead at the threads

Of the underlying motifs,

Tapestries formed by fear,

Outrage, Opportunity,

Reluctance to seek the help

To silence their demons.

With each death shroud crafted

In savage fusillade,

More of our humanity

Eddies around the drain.
